HURRAH FOR MANVEMBER
Sunday, November 8th, 2009Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah forever!

As you may or may not know, work takes up a lot of my time. It’s a little difficult to set rigid standards for myself when it comes to drawing outside of work (you know, what people do for fun I think) so I’ve become determined to draw one really low-pressure personal illustration per month. It keeps me loose, keeps me happy, and lets me draw manly men any damn I want to. So what better time to kick it off than during my favorite months, Manvember, the Only Month Whose Name Can Be Conveniently Transformed Into A Manly Pun.
I’ve been fascinated by images of men and their dogs for a while, so I came up with this. I made it a calendar so I could have something to look at while I work. Not the most exciting of reasons, but there you are. It’s still somewhat a work in progress, but I haven’t been able to upload the work I’ve done on it since I saved this version.
I’m not sure what I’m doing for next month yet, but I doodled this on my spare time and was fond of his comically tiny legs.

Let’s hope I’m actually able to finish December’s before December starts.

Thursday, November 20th, 2008First of all–some sketchbook pages.

When not working on my thesis, I’ve done other things for school. Here’s a poster design composed entirely of drawings in my sketchbook:

And a relief print I’m really excited about–I have dozens of copies on different colored paper, and I’m experimenting with collaging them together. Here’s the first one I put together:

The following is a character design for a class. Two airmen in the 1957 American Southwest find an alien. Their names are Clem and Saul. Maybe I’ll talk more about them when I’m not too worn out from thesis.
That’s it for now.
Manvember
Sunday, November 2nd, 2008I really have to start updating this blog more than once a month. To my credit, not a whole lot goes on beyond my thesis, which I am hesitant to post due to its various stages of incompletion. It’s a little difficult to go up to the same group of people twice a week and show my progress on the same pieces of artwork. It’s certainly enough to make me want to hide away.
Either way, here are some sketchbook pages.

I guess I’ve been needing a break from objectifying men in a respectful subtle way, so I came up with the Jackrabbits. Basically, if I were a rich old pervert, I’d have a mansion full of these.

$ketchbook madness
Friday, October 10th, 2008Lots of doodles! And plenty more to come, I’m sure.

Portrait of first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. Although Sergei Krikalev is my personal hero, Gagarin is still a fascinating figure. All over the former Soviet Union there are sculptures and monuments dedicated to immortalizing the young man who was essentially just following orders. The statues make him look less like a man and more like a superhero; it’s amazing. And this drawing is based on a press photo of him wearing what seems like ALL the medals and ribbons ever.

Playing around with GOLD paint. Also, the figure is referenced from a cosmonaut sculpture in Star City. It’s amazingly beautiful and stylized. I may use the sculpture as a reference for my thesis.

FINALS AND THINGS AND STUFF
Wednesday, May 14th, 2008So the semester is officially over as of Tuesday! My Junior year is over, in fact. I plan on acquiring some sort of job (or variety of jobs) over the summer, but right now I am just taking a well-deserved rest this week. Which includes posting pictures of my final Illustration Concepts project.
I chose to do a series of 4 drawings of pairs of men engaged in manly (yet homoerotic) pursuits. I call it…well. This, of course.

The other side has a pin-up size image that I personally enjoy a lot (click on image to see full-size–slightly Not Work Safe):
Much like my small ‘zine (which can be seen here), it is a short booklet made from a French-door fold that only requires one sheet of paper. In this case, a double-sided 20″ x 16″ sheet. You can see more images of it to get a better idea of how it works… (more…)
balls balls balls
Tuesday, May 6th, 2008Time for this:

My life would not be complete without Deke Slayton, Abraham Lincoln, and of course…balls.
A Productive Saturday (sort of)
Sunday, April 20th, 2008I managed some pretty decent drawin’s in my sketchbook earlier today…

A lot of photo references today; what I like to do is save every picture I find vaguely interesting on the internet and eventually draw them if the mood strikes me. So there’s a pretty eclectic mix of input, but somehow it all ends up looking like the same crap. Click on the images below to full-view.
I’ve been thinking about incorporating the two sailors in the last page into my final Concepts project for this semester, even though I am still uncertain of the layout the project will take. All signs right now point to a variety of male pin-ups….
Still workin’ out the kinks on the blog layout…and of course, the sidebar is not entirely finished. But I think I’ll blow off enough homework to get this done!
