DO YOU METRO?
Sunday, October 12th, 2008Finished a piece for school; to be submitted to Metro Newspaper as an ad for them to (hopefully) be run quarter-page in the New York Times. The text was their idea, although I intend to submit a version without it just in case. And of course, their logo had to be featured in the piece.
These are the pencils. I like to draw outside my planned crop area–just in case I want to move stuff around later, I have a little leeway.

Inked with colors:

The text I ended up doing on seperate pieces of paper and arranging them as I liked. My concept for this was around the tagline they provided, “to deserve a little free time every morning.” I know I wanted to adhere to their demands of making their paper appeal to a younger, cooler audience, but I also wanted to do something a little more abstract–hence the flying newspaper cranes. I felt like “free time” in the morning when you live in New York more or less amounts to being able to zone out on your way to work with breakfast in hand while watching things like birds flying, or the changing color of the sky. Not the most complex idea, I’m sure, but I had a lot of fun drawing it, especially the architecture of the cranes.
